The Eddy: When Creativity Meets Modular Design And Shipping Containers
Get a quoteOn the banks of the Truckee River in downtown Reno, The Eddy stands as a vibrant example of what’s possible when creativity meets modular design. Built from modified shipping containers, this open-air social hub blends bars, food, art, and games into one unforgettable destination.
It’s Not Just Space, It’s A Heart of The Community
When the idea for The Eddy was first introduced, neighbors, community members, and even local authorities were skeptical. But despite the resistance, the vision came to life and today, it stands as one of Reno’s most beloved gathering spaces, bringing people together in ways few could have imagined.
The Eddy isn’t only about bars, food, and games, it's a collaborative hub where the Reno community comes together. The venue actively partners with local businesses, artists, and instructors, making the space accessible to everyone. From free fitness classes to pop-ups that showcase local talent, The Eddy has built its reputation on hosting events without charge, creating opportunities for connection and support.
The plaza has become part of the cultural heartbeat of Reno, taking part in citywide celebrations like Sculpture Fest, Artown Festival, and Reno Craft Beer Week. It’s also available for private events, corporate gatherings, and fundraisers, offering a flexible venue that adapts to the needs of the community.
What sets The Eddy apart is not just its location, but its innovative use of recycled cargo containers. Inside this colorful space, you’ll find three container bars serving craft beer, wine, and cocktails; a pizza kitchen built directly into a container; and a rotating lineup of food trucks and pop-up vendors that keep the experience fresh.
For the project, a total of nine containers were used: seven 40-foot containers, one 20-foot, and one 10-foot. The 40-foot units were transformed into bars with cold storage, shaded seating areas, restrooms, and even a mural installation that crowns the plaza. The 20-foot container became a pizza kitchen, while the 10-foot unit supports the entrance signage and wayfinding. Together, they create a modular hub that feels both functional and artistic.
The 40-foot container that serves as a restroom is complete with plumbing, ventilation, clean finishes and modern fixtures. Another unit functions as a behind the scenes walk-in cooler where the beer and drinks are kept refrigerated ready to be served.
The Eddy offers more than just food and drinks; it’s also a canvas for local artists who have transformed the container walls into bold murals: anywhere you look you will see a mural. And with bocce courts, cornhole, live music, and yoga classes it transforms into a community backyard. Since opening in 2017, The Eddy has become a downtown staple: a seasonal gathering place where Reno’s eclectic culture thrives family-friendly by day, and a 21+ social scene by night all under string lights and Nevada skies. With three distinct bars, guests never have to wait long for a drink. Signature cocktails like the Peach Rain, a refreshing mix of Deep Eddy Peach vodka, citrus, and simple syrup, are perfect for Reno’s sunny afternoons. The food lineup is just as exciting. From wood-fired pizza made with local ingredients to a taco truck many claim is the best in Nevada, The Eddy ensures there’s something for every appetite.
The layout places everything within sight of the seating areas, creating a natural gathering spot.
The Eddy also takes pride in its ties to the artist community. Visitors will find murals, sculptures, and installations from Burning Man integrated into the space. Each piece adds character, turning the venue into an outdoor gallery where locals and visitors alike can experience Reno’s creative side.
The Meaning Behind the Name
An eddy is a swirling current in water, a place where movement slows and things come together. That’s exactly what The Eddy offers: a spot where people can drift in, pause, and connect. With its open-air design and riverfront setting, it naturally draws the community together day and night.
At its core, The Eddy is designed to be more than a destination; it's a friendly, welcoming space where people can gather, network, socialize, and strengthen the bonds that make Reno unique.
If you plan to visit The Eddy, note that it’s open seasonally from March through December, so be sure to time your trip right. And good news for pet owners: the park is dog-friendly, making it a perfect outing for you and your four-legged friends.
