Get a quoteMilitary Innovation at Fort Bragg

A covert missile launcher disguised within a standard shipping container has been identified at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This system, known as the Palletized Field Artillery Launcher (PFAL), is capable of firing the same suite of artillery rockets and ballistic missiles as the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). Developed under U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), the PFAL offers a flexible and less detectable strike capability, enhancing operational effectiveness. The containerized design allows for deployment in various configurations, including on trucks, railcars, or ships, providing versatile and mobile firepower. This innovation underscores the military's strategy of utilizing "boxes of rockets" to create dilemmas for adversaries by hiding in plain sight.

China's Share of U.S. Imports Drops to 28.8% in June 2025

In June 2025, China's share of total U.S. imports fell to 28.8%, marking a significant drop from 40% in July 2024. This decline is largely due to the ongoing impact of tariff hikes and a broader shift in U.S. sourcing strategies, with businesses increasingly turning to Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. These countries have benefited from the trade disruptions caused by higher tariffs on Chinese goods, offering more competitive alternatives. Despite the challenges posed by these shifts, total U.S. imports for the first half of 2025 have risen by 3.8% compared to the same period in 2024, suggesting a degree of stabilization in the broader import market. This increase reflects resilience in the U.S. economy as businesses adapt to new global trade dynamics

Maersk Implements Peak Season Surcharge on U.S. and Canada West Coast Routes

Maersk has announced a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for shipments from the Indian Subcontinent and Middle East to the West Coast of the United States and Canada, effective August 1, 2025. This surcharge applies to cargo originating from countries including the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Bhutan, India, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. The revised surcharge will be $1,700 for all dry containers and $3,000 for all reefer containers. Warehouse Vacancies Climb to Highest Level in More Than a Decade

Warehouse vacancy rates in the U.S. have reached their highest level in over 10 years, according to recent reports. This increase, marking a shift from the tight market conditions seen in recent years, highlights the cooling of demand for storage space in the face of slowing consumer spending and a shift towards more cautious supply chain strategies. Vacancies in key markets like Southern California and New Jersey are rising, while rents are showing signs of leveling off. As retailers and logistics companies reassess inventory levels and adjust to changing consumer behavior, warehouse space availability is growing, providing some relief to an otherwise tight industrial real estate market.

U.S. Ports Urge Delay on Tariffs for Chinese-Made Cranes

U.S. port operators are requesting the Trump administration to postpone the implementation of proposed tariffs up to 100% on Chinese-made ship-to-shore cranes and cargo-handling equipment. These tariffs, part of broader efforts to counter China's dominance in the maritime industry, would be added to existing 25% tariffs from the Biden administration. Ports argue that these measures could significantly increase infrastructure upgrade costs, especially since many ordered cranes before the tariffs were announced. China's Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) supplies nearly 80% of U.S. port cranes, with limited alternatives from smaller firms in Finland and Germany. Port leaders have requested tariff exemptions for cranes ordered before the end of 2024 and a three-year delay on new tariffs to allow time for domestic manufacturing to develop.
