Chino Approves First Shipping Container Food Hall

Chino, California, is welcoming its first shipping container-style food hall, marking a bold step in urban redevelopment. The project, dubbed “Gateway Terminal,” will replace the 62-year-old Gateway Karis Church at Schaefer and Oaks avenues. Approved by the city’s Planning Commission on July 16, the development will feature four side-by-side restaurant units built from rusted and sealed steel walls that mimic shipping containers.

In addition to the food hall, plans include a 158,548-square-foot warehouse positioned behind the dining area. Developers drew inspiration from SteelCraft, which has launched similar food halls in Long Beach, Bellflower, and Garden Grove. The design will soften its industrial look with climbing plants, steel planter boxes, and outdoor lighting.

Officials emphasized safety with setbacks from the street and proposed traffic barriers around the dining area. Construction dates are still to be determined, but the transformation signals a growing trend of adaptive reuse in SoCal’s commercial spaces.

Florida Uses Shipping Containers to Combat Dog Euthanasia

South Florida animal shelters are turning to shipping containers in a life-saving effort to reduce dog euthanasia. Faced with overcrowded facilities and limited funding, local shelters have partnered with a nonprofit to deploy retrofitted, air-conditioned containers as temporary kennels. Each insulated unit can house up to 30 small dogs or several large ones and includes fenced outdoor runs for exercise.

The pilot project aims to roll out ten of these container kennels by the end of summer. Beyond increasing capacity quickly, the program offers a humane and scalable solution to the region’s growing shelter crisis. The goal is to prevent dogs from being put down simply due to space constraints.

Officials say the containers meet animal welfare standards and are a much-needed relief valve as intake numbers rise. It’s a creative example of using industrial materials to serve community needs in a high-impact way.

Expeditors Sees Q2 Growth as Freight and Customs Surge

Expeditors International posted better-than-expected second-quarter earnings, riding a wave of increased freight movement and customs activity. The global logistics firm reported $2.65 billion in revenue and $1.34 earnings per share, outperforming Wall Street estimates. Air and ocean freight volumes rose 7% year-over-year, while customs brokerage revenue jumped by 10.5%.

Analysts credit the gains to companies accelerating imports in anticipation of potential tariff changes. Expeditors’ ability to scale efficiently in both transportation and customs services highlights the strategic role of logistics firms amid global uncertainty.

Despite the strong quarter, the company warned of ongoing market volatility through the remainder of 2025. Supply chain fluctuations, shifting trade policies, and freight rate instability remain challenges in the months ahead.

Asian Container Liners Facing Profit Downturn as Tariff Boom Fades

Asian container shipping lines are bracing for a profit dip as the temporary surge from early-year tariff-driven demand fades. In Q2, many importers rushed to move goods ahead of anticipated U.S. tariffs, inflating volumes and rates but that momentum is already showing signs of decline.

With demand pulled forward, Q3 volumes may underdeliver, pushing rates down and squeezing profits. Analysts warn that overcapacity and weakening trade sentiment could hit major players like Cosco, Evergreen, Yang Ming, and Japan’s MOL and NYK, with ripple effects across global carriers including Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.

Amazon Breaks Ground on Massive Logistics Facility in Little Rock

Amazon has officially broken ground on a 930,000-square-foot logistics facility at the Port of Little Rock, with operations expected to begin by 2027. The facility will support Amazon’s regional fulfillment network and create over 1,000 full- and part-time jobs, boosting the local economy.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders praised the development, calling it a strategic win for Arkansas thanks to Little Rock’s access to river, rail, road, and air infrastructure. Amazon representatives said the site will help increase delivery speed and efficiency while strengthening the company’s national logistics footprint.

The facility is part of Amazon’s continued investment in high-capacity logistics hubs to support growing demand for fast and reliable shipping. Local officials see it as a long-term economic driver for the region.
