Product overview
The 20ft Half-Height Hard Top Used Shipping Container is designed for transporting or storing dense, heavy, or bulk materials that do not require full container height. With a reduced profile and removable steel hard top, this unit allows for top-loading of materials like aggregates, heavy machinery parts, or scrap metal.
Constructed from durable Corten steel and built to ISO standards, the container is Cargo Worthy, structurally sound, and suitable for export. Its open-top access and lower center of gravity make it ideal for crane or forklift loading in construction, mining, and industrial applications.
Typical signs of use may include surface rust, dents, or original shipping line markings. Exterior color and condition may vary depending on inventory.
Delivery options
We offer two types of trucks for container delivery:
Tilt-Bed Truck
Ideal for easy offloading without equipment.
Requirements: 65 ft of straight clearance, 12 ft width, and 16 ft vertical clearance.
Flatbed Truck
Best if you have on-site equipment (like a forklift) for unloading.
Requirements: 65 ft of straight clearance, 12 ft width, 14 ft vertical clearance, and side access for unloading.
You will need a forklift rated for at least 10,000 lbs to remove the container.
Site Preparation
Before scheduling delivery, please ensure:
- Clear, unobstructed access for the truck.
- No overhead obstacles like trees, power lines, or structures.
- Dry, solid ground conditions. (Notify us if the ground is wet or muddy.)
Containers can be placed directly onto flat, solid surfaces — no foundation required.
Delivery Timing
Delivery is typically completed within 1–3 business days after your container is ready for dispatch.

- What is a 20ft Used Half Height container and how is it different from a standard one?
A 20ft Half Height container is a specialized unit with approximately half the height (around 4.3 feet) of a standard 20ft container. Its key feature is the open-top design with low side walls, allowing for easy and safe loading of heavy, dense, or bulk materials from the top or sides without the need for complex lifting equipment.
- What are the dimensions and storage capacity of a 20ft Used Half Height container?
While external length and width remain standard, the unique internal height is approximately 4.2 ft. This provides a reduced storage volume of about 585 cubic feet. However, its payload capacity remains very high, making it ideal for extremely heavy goods.
- What are the most common uses for a Half Height container?
Its primary uses include transporting and storing heavy equipment, scrap metal, construction debris, stones, sand, gravel, and other bulk materials. The open-top and low walls make it perfect for sites where loading by crane or excavator is required, such as construction sites, quarries, and recycling centers.
- Is a Half Height container secure?
Yes. Despite the open top, it is equipped with standard doors and locking mechanisms. Security can be significantly enhanced with optional high-security lockboxes and locks to protect the door hardware from unauthorized access. For weather or security concerns, a tarpaulin can be used to cover the top.
- Is it weatherproof?
The doors and structure are weatherproof. However, due to the open-top design, the contents are exposed to precipitation. For moisture-sensitive goods, we highly recommend using a fitted tarpaulin to cover the container.
- Can Half Height containers be stacked?
Yes, they feature standard corner castings and are designed to be stackable. However, due to their low center of gravity and unique design, it is generally recommended to stack no more than two units high. They can be moved using a forklift with a capacity of at least 5,000 lbs via the forklift pockets.
- What are the delivery options for a Half Height container?
Conexwest offers flexible delivery on a flatbed truck or specialized container carrier. Our team can assist with placement to ensure the container is positioned correctly on your site, which must be level, solid, and accessible for the delivery vehicle.
- Can I customize a Half Height container?
Absolutely. While the open-top design is fixed, common customizations include adding internal lashing points, protective liners for the walls, and enhanced security features. The exterior can also be painted to your specifications.
- What is the typical condition of a "used" Half Height container?
Our used Half Height containers are sourced from shipping and industrial operations. They are structurally sound and perfectly suited for their intended heavy-duty purposes. They may show cosmetic wear like scratches and dents, which is normal and does not affect performance.
- How does the cost of a Half Height compare to a standard container?
Due to their specialized nature and lower availability, Half Height containers can sometimes be priced differently than standard units. They offer exceptional value for specific applications where easy top-loading and high weight capacity are critical. Contact us for current pricing and availability.
- Are there any special site preparation requirements?
The site should be level, stable, and able to support the weight of a fully loaded container. Since it is shorter, considerations for overhead clearance are minimized, but ground-level access for loading equipment remains important.
- What is the payload capacity?
The Half Height container retains a high payload capacity, often similar to a standard 20ft container (around 52,000 lbs). Please confirm the exact maximum gross mass (MGW) and tare weight with our team for your specific unit.
